How to Stop Police Car Alarms in 7 Days to Die

Police cars might offer impressive loot, but be prepared for a fight first

If you’ve encountered a police car in 7 Days to Die, you might be tempted to break into it, thinking there would be some great loot in there. While you might be right, chances are, you probably weren’t expecting the police car to sound an alarm, ringing the dinner bell for any zombies nearby.

Once the police car’s alarm goes off, you don’t have long before you quickly become swarmed by feral zombies, and what’s worse is, that these zombies will sprint at you, making them much more difficult to deal with. They’re more often than not accompanied by an acid-spitting police zombie too, making things even worse.

How to Turn Off the Police Car Alarm

Once you’ve set off the alarm, there is only one way to deal with it; hitting the police car until it breaks down enough that the alarm stops.

Before you can do this, you will need to deal with the zombies that are swarming at you. Or you could run away and come back later, but this would be a waste of perfectly good XP. If you’re able to, it’s best to just tackle the zombies head-on.

The police car has three states:

  • Locked
  • Jammed (Alarm state)
  • Unlocked

When you hit the car into the jammed state, from the locked state, this is when the alarm gets triggered, alerting nearby zombies, and a swarm of running zombies too.

If you really don’t think you can handle the zombie swarm, or you’re near the start of the game and don’t have the stats yet to handle a fight like this, simply run away and come back later. You should be able to get into the vehicle without setting the alarm off again.

How to Avoid the Police Car Alarm

If you want to loot the police car, but really aren’t up for a fight, the good news is that you can get into the car without setting off the alarm, but depending on how far through the game you are, it might require some patience.

The simple way to get into the police car without setting off the alarm is by using lockpicks. But if you’re in a new game, or you’ve not leveled up your lockpicking skills yet, you might need to bring a lot of lockpicks with you, as it could take a fair amount to get in without setting off the alarm.

If you really don’t have the patience for lockpicking, the only other option to avoid a fight would be to shoot the police car from a distance, giving you plenty of room to avoid the swarm, but of course, doing it this way will set off the alarm.

The Police Car Alarm Won’t Stop

In some cases, you might find that even after hitting the car until it no longer says jammed, you still have an alarm. While rare, it does seem like there is the occasional bug that causes the alarm to continue going off, even after the player has taken the right steps to stop it.

If this happens, there are a couple of things you can try to fix the issue:

  • Completely dismantle the vehicle until nothing is left
  • Restart the server (or local game, depending on how you’re playing)
  • Use console commands to delete the vehicle

If the police car is in a common quest area, you could also try using the 7 Days to Die console commands to force a quest in the area, this should force the area into an instance, which should reset the state of the vehicle. But this would only work if you’re lucky enough to have a police car in a quest area.

The bottom line is, if you’re looking to get into a police car in 7 Days to Die, either expect a fight or be prepared to take your time trying to pick the lock. But at the end of the day, the rewards inside the car, more often than not outweigh the dangers.
